Deadline Approaching for Nutrition Facts Panel Updates

Written by Nosco | August 01, 2018
In May of 2016, the FDA announced that supplement manufacturers would be required to convert all nutrition facts panels to its newly developed format.

After an extension, manufacturers of over $10 million in sales now have until January 1, 2020 to convert all panels to the new format. As it stands today, the current nutrition facts panel format is over 20 years old. The required revisions are intended to more accurately reflect current consumer dietary habits, as well as updated science and research on the link between diet and chronic diseases.

Specific areas that need updating include:
  • Increased type size for calories, servings per container and serving size
  • Updated single serving sizes to accurately reflect how much people typically eat
  • The amount of "added sugar" in any given product
  • Declared amounts of vitamin D, calcium, iron and potassium
  • An updated daily value footnote

Making these changes can be time consuming and costly for companies managing hundreds of SKUs and multiple brands. However, failure to comply can result in FDA enforcement actions.
